If truly we desire to know God, we just got to be frank and think about it.
Who is the person that we know most? May be father? mother? sibling? or friend?

So how do we know them, and what makes us so confident to say that we know them?
Simpler answer will be I know them so I know them. But with little more consideration we realize we know them because we have spent time, talked to them, and listened to the. We have been with them more that others.

We opened our heart, thoughts and shared with each other. If not, what we think we know may be just on the surface or superficial.

In the same way, it is as simple as that. We spend time with God. Talk to God, listen to God.

We will address Bible as the Word of God instead. Or rather it is Word of God but people call it Bible. Bible come from Latin word “Biblia” which just means “books”. If we discover God and what He said, we will know Word of God is not just “books”.

In the Word of God (Bible), among first few names of the more well know people are Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Moses etc. We can discover that all of them somehow knew God. But question is how did they come to know when there was no written Word of God (Bible) existing during that time?

We will discover that during the time of Noah, that is many thousands of years ago, there were very few or it could even possibly be only Noah who really knew God. How did Noah know God?

So how could Noah have know God? In the book of Genesis 6:9, it says Noah walked with God. Some English translation of the Bible, states Noah walked in close fellowship with God. He must have because if not, how one could walk with someone continuously for long time? The word “walk” which originated from Hebrew word also has the meaning of “Continuous”.

Word of God says another person called Enoch too walked with God <Genesis 5:22~> for very long time.

In order to know God, firstly, we need to come to God with genuine heart, and build the relationship with God. As we all know one of the most important and inevitable factor in relationship is communication. We need to talk to God, and listen to God.

God said in His Word that He will not turn away those who will come to Him with genuine heart < John 6:37>.
Also He said, <Jeremiah 29:12~> when we call upon God and come to God in prayer, He will listen to us, and if we seek God with all our heart we will find God. Hebrew word for the “find” has the meaning of learn, encounter, discover, recognize. Truly many who have sincerely and faithfully sought after God has encountered, discovered, and come to know God.

However, we need to understand that God is God. God know all things including our heart. If we try to be funny by seeking God to mock at God, to test out, or seek in such likely manner we are only asking for trouble.
Also God, being God, it will not be in our term. It has to be in God’s term. This is something many has difficulty in accepting especially in this generation where we claim “human rights” without thinking deep in our heart of what is truly right, but just for our own selfish desire.

God’s term is that we need to believe in God. It is to acknowledge our status that we are but helpless sinners who have done and continue to do wrongs and made a big mess of the world God created, which includes abusing, harming others, things that hurts nature causing current environmental situation.

It is to acknowledge that we need God to save us from our evil, our sin, and our self. Ultimately, we need to receive what God has done to save us, by sacrificing Himself and dying for us. So that our debts will be paid.

God states clearly in God’s Word that without receiving and believing Lord Jesus Christ that He died for our sins, we will not come to really know God. Because our sin and our guilt itself (even our own self) will keep blocking us from knowing God.

– To know more about what God has already done for us, we will have separate post to address soon –

However, if we have already received God’s love and saving grace through Lord Jesus, it is only a matter of time and our availability to God, before we come to discover and know Who really God is.

It will be by far the most rewarding thing in our whole life.

There will be yet another post on other way to know God more.
“Bon Voyage”,

Reserved For You (Gen 13:7)

Gen 13:10,

Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere …

So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself …

Abraham obeyed God and left his home town to the place God said He will show, Lot, who was his nephew followed him.

Years later when both were blessed by God, the land was too small for both of them. So Abraham told Lot to choose which land he would take. In spite of offering better land to Abraham through whom became rich and blessed, Lot looked around and chose the better one that was well watered everywhere…

At times, it seem it is unfair. “How can he do this? I raised him up! He is rich because of me!”, “Why did God just let him chose that land? I thought God Who knows all things will give me a better land!”

These might have been words burning inside me if I was Abraham.

Many times in our lives we face such or even worse seemingly unfair circumstances. But … is that so?

God Knows …

  • Soon after Lot and Abraham separated, and Lot went to Sodom, it was conquered by kings of neighbouring countries. His possessions were taken and himself was taken captive. In fact, it was Abraham who came and rescued him from the kings.

Furthermore,  Gen 13:13, the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners.

Years later, because of wickedness or Sodom and Gomorrah, God destroyed Sodom once and for all by raining brimstones and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 19:24). Only Lot and his 2 daughters managed to escape by the mercy of God.

We know what we have seen yesterday, and what we see today. But not what will come tomorrow. But God sees and knows what’s coming in future and let Abraham have the better land.

Abraham was blessed even more later years. It was Abraham God chose and purposed to use him for greater plans that God has for him, because Abraham believed and obeyed God.

By letting this situation, God indeed separated Lot from Abraham so that Lot will not be hindrance to Abraham’s blessing and God’s destiny for him. It was not Abraham chased Lot out, nor was it him who chose the land for Lot. Lot chose “for himself” (Gen 13:11).

So what Lot should have done? I think it would have been more honourable for Lot to stick to Abraham faithfully and being submissive to him (e.g. like Ruth was to Naomi, Ruth 1:~ and not letting him go like Elisha did on Elijah), instead of letting his workers fight with Abraham’s, since all blessing he received was basically through Abraham.

  • It was only after Lot was separated that God told Abraham
“Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever. I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then your seed may also be numbered.  Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its breadth; for I will give it to you.” Gen 13:14~17

God Reserved the better…  or rather Best for the ones who trust Him. Let’s not be too quick to judge God. Let go (of our thinking, our way) and Let God.

Rom 8:28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.
