How To Know God? – Part 1

If truly we desire to know God, we just got to be frank and think about it.
Who is the person that we know most? May be father? mother? sibling? or friend?

So how do we know them, and what makes us so confident to say that we know them?
Simpler answer will be I know them so I know them. But with little more consideration we realize we know them because we have spent time, talked to them, and listened to the. We have been with them more that others.

We opened our heart, thoughts and shared with each other. If not, what we think we know may be just on the surface or superficial.

In the same way, it is as simple as that. We spend time with God. Talk to God, listen to God.

We will address Bible as the Word of God instead. Or rather it is Word of God but people call it Bible. Bible come from Latin word “Biblia” which just means “books”. If we discover God and what He said, we will know Word of God is not just “books”.

In the Word of God (Bible), among first few names of the more well know people are Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Moses etc. We can discover that all of them somehow knew God. But question is how did they come to know when there was no written Word of God (Bible) existing during that time?

We will discover that during the time of Noah, that is many thousands of years ago, there were very few or it could even possibly be only Noah who really knew God. How did Noah know God?

So how could Noah have know God? In the book of Genesis 6:9, it says Noah walked with God. Some English translation of the Bible, states Noah walked in close fellowship with God. He must have because if not, how one could walk with someone continuously for long time? The word “walk” which originated from Hebrew word also has the meaning of “Continuous”.

Word of God says another person called Enoch too walked with God <Genesis 5:22~> for very long time.

In order to know God, firstly, we need to come to God with genuine heart, and build the relationship with God. As we all know one of the most important and inevitable factor in relationship is communication. We need to talk to God, and listen to God.

God said in His Word that He will not turn away those who will come to Him with genuine heart < John 6:37>.
Also He said, <Jeremiah 29:12~> when we call upon God and come to God in prayer, He will listen to us, and if we seek God with all our heart we will find God. Hebrew word for the “find” has the meaning of learn, encounter, discover, recognize. Truly many who have sincerely and faithfully sought after God has encountered, discovered, and come to know God.

However, we need to understand that God is God. God know all things including our heart. If we try to be funny by seeking God to mock at God, to test out, or seek in such likely manner we are only asking for trouble.
Also God, being God, it will not be in our term. It has to be in God’s term. This is something many has difficulty in accepting especially in this generation where we claim “human rights” without thinking deep in our heart of what is truly right, but just for our own selfish desire.

God’s term is that we need to believe in God. It is to acknowledge our status that we are but helpless sinners who have done and continue to do wrongs and made a big mess of the world God created, which includes abusing, harming others, things that hurts nature causing current environmental situation.

It is to acknowledge that we need God to save us from our evil, our sin, and our self. Ultimately, we need to receive what God has done to save us, by sacrificing Himself and dying for us. So that our debts will be paid.

God states clearly in God’s Word that without receiving and believing Lord Jesus Christ that He died for our sins, we will not come to really know God. Because our sin and our guilt itself (even our own self) will keep blocking us from knowing God.

– To know more about what God has already done for us, we will have separate post to address soon –

However, if we have already received God’s love and saving grace through Lord Jesus, it is only a matter of time and our availability to God, before we come to discover and know Who really God is.

It will be by far the most rewarding thing in our whole life.

There will be yet another post on other way to know God more.
